During the course of the day, Hyde-DC Middle School students are taught basic and advanced skills through a variety of instructional models. Children learn in different ways and at different rates, so instruction that incorporates the use of multiple senses is key. Each day, our Middle School students are introduced to new concepts through direct instruction and cooperative learning, which allows for peer coaching, learning with accommodations, and modifications provided to students in need of extra assistance.
Through the model of inclusion, identified learners with special needs receive additional assistance within their classrooms by teachers who have been trained in addressing special needs methodically and strategically. In some instances, outside services are provided to assist students in achieving academic excellence; this includes, but is not limited to speech and language therapy and occupational therapy. Students are given multiple opportunities to further develop other talents and interests during instruction in non-academic areas including African American Studies, Computer Technology, Life Skills and Physical Education.
