Hyde Leadership Public Charter School's Performing Arts Program is designed to challenge each student to explore and ultimately unleash his or her hidden talents. Every Hyde student participates in performing arts in one of six areas: Acting, Dance, Vocal, Step, Sound and Lighting, and Art. The program motivates students to take a deeper look and find a undiscovered talent. The curriculum includes development of performance skills, and culminates in the creation and production of a community-wide show.
Participation in the Performing Arts Program allows students to experience character growth by testing courage, providing leadership opportunities with peers, and encouraging self-discovery and creative expression. Students are taught the basic techniques of Acting, Dance, and Vocal Music by dedicated and experienced teachers.
The program emphasizes effort, as opposed to aptitude or ability. The focus is on how well a student takes a risk, not how well he or she performs. The Department expects a positive and productive attitude from all students at all times, and is determined to present meaningful and entertaining performances three times per year.
The learning objectives for performing arts students are:
• Growth in self-confidence through public performances
• Structure and discipline in an active learning environment
• Community building through common experience
• Stretching student comfort zones
• Creation and presentation of a finished work
• Self and cultural expression
All Hyde-DC students must complete at least three credits of performing arts before graduation. Grades focus on “attitude and effort,” as well as risk-taking abtility. A student’s “attitude and effort” is judged according to several factors, including attendance at rehearsals and shows; participation; work rate and effort; commitment to personal and team best; behavior; and, sportsmanship (respect for faculty/staff and peers).
