Hyde Leadership Public Charter High School’s academic program is designed to challenge, engage, develop, and support lifelong learners. In each classroom, students are challenged to go after their personal best by peers and teachers. Teachers facilitate learning through a thoroughly-mapped curriculum that is aligned to the DC Public Schools standards of learning and the DC Comprehensive Assessment System (CAS).
The core academic program consists of five departments: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History/Social Studies, and World Languages. Each department provides a differentiated style of instruction so that each student, no matter their learning style, will achieve. Teachers and administrators are fully aware that different learning styles cause children to learn differently. Hyde-DC provides consistent professional development opportunities for teachers to be trained in instructional strategies that cater to multi-level classrooms, as well as techniques to deal with diferent forms of intelligence.
Hyde-DC High School students reach two grades -- an achievement grade and an effort grade -- in every class. An achievement grade is a conventional average of the student's graded assignments. It reflects a student's academic achievement based on the quality and the quantity of work he/she has completed during the grading period. An effort grade is a reflect of a student's learning attitude, effort and work ethic. The effort grade displays how hard an individual worked each grading period. (Click here for additional information on Hyde-DC's grading policies and procedures.)
Since the school services students from all around city, with many different abilities and disabilities, Hyde Leadership Public Charter School has opted to use a full inclusion model to serve the needs of all students. The cultural climate of Hyde-DC and attitude of Hyde administrators, teachers, and support staff embrace the belief that children with disabilities, to the maximum extent possible, belong in classes and the school community in general with students who are not disabled.
