  Building Character

Hyde-DC Middle School's dedication to building a cohesive character culture is established through weekly school meetings, student discovery group meetings and monthly parent meetings.

More specifically, the Middle School is the focus of Hyde's Character in the Classroom (CiC) project.  In July 2006, Hyde Leadership was selected as a recipient of the Partnerships in Character Education Program Federal grant.  The grant is permitting Hyde-DC to partner with the Hyde Foundation and Cornerstone Consulting to develop and rigorously evaluate a program to assist faculty in connecting character to academic excellence; to support students to more fully realize their potential for academic excellence, and to work with parents to learn to foster excellence and integrity in their children and families.

The work of the CiC team builds upon the recognized strength of the Hyde Program:  a powerful character and culture; strong collegiality, trust, and respect among teachers; and a parent program second to none at helping parents work on their own character so they can help students.  The project goal is to take each of these strengths and add to them elements from the cutting-edge theory and research to more fully realize the Hyde Program potential for excellence and ethics.

The unique element of the CiC project is its focus on integrating character development into the academic curriculum.  Many schools have “character programs” that are an add-on to the central academic curriculum.  In keeping with the Hyde philosophy, CiC seeks to interweave the two processes as thoroughly as we see it done in athletics, performing arts and community service.  Middle School students will connect character to excellence in order to find success in the classroom and on mandated standardized evaluations.
